The eye surgeon eats an avocado

On his lunch break he slices an avocado in two.
Holding the half that cradles the round brown stone.
He enjoys the way the firm green flesh
Curls into the bowl of his silver spoon.

He guides the spoon around the brown stone
Which is soon balanced on the tiniest green plinth.
With tongs he then extracts the stone.
He enjoys swallowing the last green spoonful.

Now it is time for two surgeries:
One full thickness transplantation of cornea,
One extracapsular extraction of crystalline lens
And insertion of artificial one. Easy!

Later, he will enjoy going home replete, neat, unsoiled
And feeding his child an egg, soft boiled.

  1. It IS funny but it’s clever and subtle too. I was expecting something a trifle more trite! And I love spooning the avo out around the stone too, leaving it balanced on the tiniest green plinth! BTW when is the poetry reading at Pah homestead?

And extra BTW, the bank won’t lend me what I want to that’s that I think. I’m not trying any further. Might still go to the auction though if you want to come…….sh

  2. Yukky! I’d love the eye surgeon to read it! He might be pleased by the precision though – in language and acts.

BTW I seem only to be able to access the previous poem each time, so will just catch up gradually.
